The Arley Consulting Company Limited was commissioned by Taylor Woodrow Limited to undertake a comprehensive ground investigation and contaminated land assessment at their development site near Bolton.  The site was formerly occupied by a pottery works and saw mill and other potentially contaminative uses.  There were also 2 shafts and slag heaps associated with former mining activities on site.

Within the study we carried out the following tasks:

This phase of the study included a rigorous investigation of the history of the site.  A preliminary conceptual model was derived to identify potential constraints to the proposed residential development

A detailed site investigation was designed based on the findings of the preliminary conceptual model.  The investigation comprised trial pits, cable percussive boreholes and window sample boreholes.  Soil samples were collected using strict quality assurance procedures and selected samples were analysed for specific chemical contamination.  Six gas monitoring probes were installed and monitored regularly to assess the ground gas regime.

A quantified risk assessment was undertaken in accordance with current legislation and policy.  The potential risks to the statutory receptors were identified and a pragmatic and effective remediation strategy was developed. Produced a detailed remediation method statement that was approved by the Local Authority.

TACCL were retained to provide ongoing support to the reclamation team during the works and specialist advice was provided throughout.  Remediation included the excavation and off site disposal of 1,000 m3 of non hazardous waste. Validation testing was undertaken during the works and a completion report was submitted to the LA following all remediation works in accordance with the planning requirements.
